Happy Mother’s Day to all the #MomsLittleBlackBook readers! May is always the month where I bring the mom into my column and usually knock off something on my personal bucket list. I had grand ideas this year since both my daughters are over 18 now. We were going skydiving! I was a member of the Illinois State University Skydiving Club in the early 1990s and it was finally time to share this passion with my girls.

Well then March came - and not only were we not skydiving, we weren’t flying anywhere for spring break, or even leaving the house for that matter due to the mandated “Shelter in Place”. Wow – that is hard for the Mom in #MomsLittleBlackBook. We don’t sit well in my house; so, it was time to get creative.

It was refreshing to see so many west suburban companies offering “kits to go” for at home projects. Karina Kappel of Naperville was no exception. She immediately started offering her cookie kits for touchless porch pickup. The pre-made boxes were beautifully packed with frosting, sprinkles, and pre-cut spring themed sugar cookies. Sitting at home with my girls was relaxing – no baking, no clean-up, no mess – just pure simple fun. Even as teenagers, my daughters thoroughly enjoyed this activity as a diversion to the craziness of the outside world.

Karina created her home studio in Naperville and opened The Artful Baker years ago. She has been servicing countrywide - shipping her custom creations everywhere, including St. Charles, Downers Grove, Geneva, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Oswego, and of course, Naperville. In a typical day, she offers workshops and traveling cookie decorating, as well as cupcake decorating classes, bringing all the necessary ingredients and tools. Additionally, she will be hosting adult sip and create classes.

Launching the “Cookie Decorating Kits” was the perfect way for Karina to share her passion -and for the community to continue supporting small businesses.
