MOM'S LITTLE BLACK BOOK | AIR Naperville

Updated: Feb 20, 2025

JUST HANGING AROUND

There is certainly intimidation when you look at online photos of anyone doing aerial yoga. It appears slightly impossible for the average human to defy gravity AND exercise while swinging from the rafters in an aerial hammock with no prior experience.

We discovered very quickly that with guidance from a patient instructor who offered step by step instruction and hands-on support, even the most uncoordinated person became a star for the day. With each new move, we gained confidence - and the calmness that filled the room was such a positive release of energy in our space. Even those who had knee injuries, shoulder injuries, or back problems found ways to participate with adaptive moves.

We all quickly became pros and learned a variety of new poses that had us hanging upside down, perching like a lion in a tree, or lying in a meditative state in a hammock-like position. The movements provide an incredible stress release, and the stretching feels completely and totally amazing.

I can honestly say, the next day when I woke up, I knew I had just engaged muscles that I am not sure I knew I had! The class can range from a yoga style stretching class to a genuine workout that will have your heart pumping and body moving to music. Don’t let the uncertainty of trying something new prevent you from going beyond your comfort zone. The benefit of aerial yoga relieves joint pressure and spinal compression that floor workouts can trigger so this could be a win win!
