Sunshine, Sunsets, and Sailing

CHICAGO–Where the Chicago skyline meets the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, lies a unique experience.  On a chilly summer night, amidst the gentle lapping of waves and the occasional gust of wind, I was so excited to have my daughter back!  We embarked on a #MomsLittleBlackBook journey of discovery with 3rd Coast Cruising Chicago, where sailing isn't just about navigation, but also about bonding.

Shortly before the sun dipped below the horizon, we stepped aboard a sleek sailboat, greeted by our Skipper Jared and four other members of the 3rd Coast Cruising club.  With expertise and enthusiasm, they eagerly welcomed us, igniting our excitement to try sailing for the first time!

We eagerly listened as our Skipper explained the basics of sailing, nautical lingo, departing the dock, hoisting the sails, and understanding wind direction.

The sunset was gorgeous from the water as it transformed to city lights twinkling in the distance.  My daughter and I were able to take turns at the helm, gripping the tiller with a mixture of concentration and exhilaration. As we steered the boat, a sense of camaraderie washed over us, bridging the gap and strengthening the bond between the experienced sailors and ourselves.  It truly took a team!  The crew members were incredibly patient, teaching and guiding us, while also ensuring fun and safety.

As darkness descended and the stars emerged, we found ourselves immersed in a world of tranquility and beauty. With only the sound of the wind in the sails, we felt a profound sense of peace, far removed from the hustle and bustle of life. 

We discovered the power of teamwork and communication. We learned to anticipate each other's movements, to communicate effectively, and to navigate the waters with confidence and grace.  Each tack and jibe became a testament to our growing knowledge and deep appreciation for our Skipper and his team. 

As the sailing lesson drew to a close, we most certainly realized the value of trying something new, that is attainable for all ages, and creates memories that will last a lifetime.
