John Madormo of Naperville Brings the Wild West to Life for Young Readers

NAPERVILLE–Naperville’s own John Madormo, a retired assistant professor of broadcast communications at North Central College, has turned his lifelong passion for storytelling into an exciting new chapter. After 38 years of teaching, Madormo retired in 2018 and now dedicates his time to writing. His latest project? A four-book middle-grade western series titled The Abilene Kid, published by Wolfpack Publishing.

The series kicks off with Dead Man’s Hand, introducing readers to Dominick Dalesandro, a twelve-year-old with an unusual obsession: the Old West. While his peers are busy with sports and video games, Dominick immerses himself in tales of cowboys, outlaws, and lawmen. His fascination centers on Sheriff Amos "Lone Wolf" Malone, a legendary figure from 1880s Abilene, Kansas.

Dominick’s life takes a thrilling turn when he discovers a rare biography of Sheriff Malone in his local library. As he opens the dusty tome, a magical portal transports him to the Wild West,

where he meets the legendary lawman himself. Sheriff Malone, nearing retirement, recruits Dominick as his successor, setting the stage for an action-packed adventure.

The first book in the series, Dead Man’s Hand, debuted on April 29, 2025 with subsequent titles—Boot Hill Curse, Sacred Relics, and Sweet Revenge—releasing monthly through July. With its blend of history, magic, and adventure, The Abilene Kid promises to captivate young readers and transport them to a time of dusty trails and daring heroes.

Keep an eye out for this local author’s thrilling series—it’s a ride you won’t want to miss!
