30 MONTHS PROBATION WITH FIRST 150 DAYS SERVED IN COOK COUNTY JAIL
It was a surprise to the former 'Empire' actor Jussie Smollett and his supporters as the Judge sentenced him to 30-months probation Thursday, with the first 150 days to be spent in Cook County Jail for the 2019 staging of a racist and homophobic attack, as well as lying to Chicago police. This sentence came after the actor was found guilty in December. Smollett was also ordered to pay $120,106 in restitution to the City of Chicago for resources spent on investigating the hoax. Smollett was also personally fined $25,000.
Smollett, who had waived his right to comment before the verdict, announced he was “not suicidal” and “innocent” after the sentencing. He repeatedly stated that he is “not suicidal,” insisting that if anything happens to him in jail, that he would never take his own life.
