MEET ARMANDO SANDERS OF YORKVILLE, MONTGOMERY POLICE DEPARTMENT DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF
The second in command at the Montgomery Police Department, Deputy Police Chief Armando Sanders is taking his talents as the department’s certified sketch artist to the streets, bringing smiles to the Kendall County community.
A married father of four, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, noticed many families walking in the neighborhood and started chalk drawing with his son Gabriel. As they drew more pieces, neighbors asked he would draw characters on their driveway. He even drew the Yorkville Fox Logo, Cookie Monster, and Olaf at Mike & Denise’s Pizzeria and Pub to entertain customers as they were picking up curbside orders.
Furthermore, he honored a 16-year-old teen who helps care for her five siblings, one of which has down syndrome and another with leukemia, to express appreciation for all the work she does to help others.
Creating meaningful pieces for those who are ill or unable to go out makes it extra special, such as the piece he did for a senior citizen who loved his artwork and said it helped put a smile on her face during these tough times.
“That’s what it’s all about,” Armando says. “It generates good conversation and is a reminder of some old memories.”
Thus far, his personal favorite has been an underwater theme from Little Mermaid, with Flounder and Sebastian, and Nemo from Finding Nemo, because they are all smiling! - Kristen Kucharski
