TO GIVE, TO INSPIRE | Get to Know Your Newcomers Group

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEWCOMER’S GROUP Moving to a new city is stressful all on its own -finding a home, packing, moving, unpacking. Even tougher if you are now settled into your new space and know absolutely no one in the area. I have been lucky to have known folks wherever I moved, but then I haven’t truly moved more than an hour away at any point from where I grew up. Many, though, have found themselves searching for new like-minded friends and community involvement. One of the best ways to start is to find your local Newcomer Groups.

Newcomer Groups are social organizations dedicated to providing an environment where residents can develop friendships, enjoy many activities and special interest groups and become part of the community. Activities could range from movie nights, book clubs, outings, and outdoor activities. Several Newcomer Groups also have philanthropic causes and events if you are interested in learning more about the needs in the community. An added benefit is being able to meet club members who could introduce you to other organizations and opportunities in the community.

In an age where people use technology so frequently to manage their relationships, a Newcomer Group focuses on face-to-face interaction to build a network. However, most also use a Facebook page to allow you to constantly stay in touch with their calendar and members as well as having a great place to be able to ask questions about your neighborhood.

Some groups are free to join with costs per activity and others may have a small annual fee that covers benefits. Try looking for your community’s group on Facebook or search for their website. If you don’t find one, often your village, park district or library will have information on newcomer events.
