SAVORY & SWEET SISTERS | Buttermilk with Two West Suburban Locations

Updated: Dec 22, 2019

A GREAT WAY TO START YOUR DAY The breakfast craze that started during 2015 in Geneva has now spread to Naperville. Be sure to get your name on No Wait and make this place a destination. Owner Katie Kouvelis and her husband Spiro Kouvelis took a leap of faith when they sold their house to open Buttermilk Geneva. They set high standards, oversee everything and truly care about all that their business entails– especially the customers. They have created a positive energy and what a success it has been! With lines out the door and customers eager to get in, Buttermilk is a cult favorite.

We had to eat there several times to get a taste of all they have to offer. The extensive breakfast and lunch menu make it difficult to just pick one item! While it’s hard to try something new, because favorites keep beckoning you, it’s the only way to find your next new favorite.

Katie’s inspiration of Southern cuisine is throughout this self-taught chef’s creative menu. Growing up helping her mom make dinner every night with everything from scratch, had to have made an indelible impression that continues on in the attention to detail at Buttermilk– all the way down to the homemade jam and butter.

One of Katie’s favorites, now also one of ours, is the Alabama Hot Chicken Benny. Homemade cheddar scallion biscuits topped with fried chicken thigh glazed with hot pepper jelly, eggs, sharp white cheddar and an Alabama white BBQ sauce. This unique Benedict is a savory delight with just the slightest amount of heat. Pair with the Honey Bun pancakes, buttermilk pancakes infused with honey butter and topped with buttermilk syrup and toasted almonds, for the “perfect balance of sweet and savory”.

Another favorite is the, sweet and savory, biscuits and sausage gravy. We opted to try the Farmhouse potatoes, wondering why we had waited, which are Buttermilk’s delicious crispy potatoes with Havarti, onions, bacon, ham and green peppers added for a delectable combination of flavors. Our server Nick Thomka, left us with one of his favorites to try next time, the Lil’ Bit of Chicken Fried sandwich but served Alabama style.

With an amazing coffee bar, and all that Buttermilk has to offer it’s no wonder it’s a favorite of many!
