FARM WELCOMES ALL AGES TO INTERACTIVE EVENT

The weather outside may be frightful but the farm is so delightful, so don’t let the cold temps deter you from experiencing Primrose Farm during a special event from 12-4pm Saturday, January 5.

During the Winter on the Farm afternoon, family members of all ages will delight in the winter activities from shelling corn and making crafts, to wagon rides and animal visits.

“Every family should experience Primrose Farm in the winter, and this event gives all ages an interactive opportunity to understand the various preparations necessary for winter farm life,” said Alison Jones, Manager of Farm Programs and Interpretive Services.

With lanterns lighting the way, take your child’s mitten and say hello to the Jersey cows; stop by the Nigerian Dwarf goats in their fluffy winter coats; and awe at the baby lamb born in mid-December. Then step right into the farmer’s role by shelling and grinding corn and mixing feed.

Other chores could include gathering wood to heat the wood-burning stove in the summer kitchen, moving hay and straw bales or feeding animals, which in addition to the cows, goats and sheep include Belgian Draft horses, Columbian Wyandotte chickens and miniature donkeys.

Dependent on weather, families will be encouraged to build a snowman or make their mark with colored snow art.

When your cheeks get rosy, warm up over the bonfire barrels or grab some hot chocolate and cookies in the candlelit summer kitchen. While you’re there, pull up a chair and have your child get creative with a holiday thank you card craft to take home.

But don’t leave before cozying up with family on a 20-minute wagon ride, marveling at the vast agricultural landscape of 100-plus acres of this living history farm.

Advanced registration is required for Winter on the Farm at www.stcparks.org.

The fee is $5 per person for residents and $8 per person for nonresidents. Wagon rides are an additional $2 per person. For more information, call Alison Jones at 630-513-4374.
