July 2016 – SUBURBAN EGYPTIAN ADVENTURE

Mom’s Little Black Book suburban Egyptian adventure fits right in with this month’s Creative Minds theme as Wadsworth, Illinois residents, Jim and Linda Onan, used their love for pyramids and creative minds to build their very own Gold Pyramid House and open it for tours. Absolutely Fascinating!

You have probably been to Great America a bunch of times and never realized that just down the street, on a quiet little road, sits a 17,000 square foot, 6-story-home, brilliantly gold pyramid – inclusive with its very own King Tuts tomb and towering Ramses II guard.

After American Universities claimed that there were mysterious, supernatural, and magical powers related to pyramids, Jim Onan’s tested the theory by building this house. Our tour guide, Jim’s son, was positively engaging with stories from his childhood growing up in this gigantic gold house, sharing stories about house chores, which included gold leafing doors and painting the exterior, to the scientific powers of the pyramid itself which affect the level of the water in the moat surrounding the house, as well as eliminate dust within the house - which is a really good thing, since every corner of the house is filled with elaborate and elegant Egyptian furnishings, artifacts, and paintings!

Although the pyramid is actively open for tours from May through October, the family still lives in the home, making the visit even more authentic and captivating. Also located on the property is a museum with an exact replica of Tutankhamum Tomb, which is also open for viewing.

The Gold Pyramid House has been featured on ABC7, That’s Incredible, Home Strange Home, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and BBC! This is a must for your summer to-do list! –Kristen Kucharski
