7 SPECTACULAR Hotter than Hot Health Trends & Where to Find Them

To find out what’s trending in fashion, music, or pop culture, all you have to do is turn to your teenager…or Bravo TV. But if you are looking to make good on some of your New Year’s resolutions, we’ve done the leg work for you. According to a recent article by Walter R. Thompson, PhD, FACSM and the annual American College of Sports Medicine’s survey on fitness, here’s what you need to be “in the know”:

1. Personal Training

If you are not seeing the results you’d like, you may want to jump on the personal training bandwagon. With more students majoring in kinesiology, as well as better credentialing for personal trainers, odds are you will get what you need from either a one-on-one session or a more cost-effective group training session. 2. Exercise and Weight Loss

In addition to nutrition, exercise is KEY in a proper weight loss program. Days of “I just want to be skinny” are a thing of the past as all of us are realizing that being fit is just as, if not more, important in weight loss and long-term weight control. 3. Yoga

Based on ancient tradition, yoga utilizes a series of specific body postures practiced not only for relaxation, but for health. Many forms exist today, including power, Yogalates, bikram, ashtanga, and vinyasa. All are perfect for taking a much-needed deep breath after the holiday season. 26hot: Bikram Yoga in Glen Ellyn, www.26hot.com/, Greenleaf Yoga in St. Charles, www.greenleafyogastudio.com, Power Yoga on Main in Downers Grove, www.poweryogaonmain.com.

4. Fitness Programs for Older Adults

Hooray for today’s seniors – they are more active than ever! So as baby boomers age into retirement, many health and fitness professionals (as well as a lot of our area park districts) are creating age-appropriate fitness programs to keep them healthy and active. 5. Wellness Coaching

Wellness coaching is a relatively new term and typically combines a one-on-one approach, similar to a personal trainer. Wellness coaching offers support, guidance, and encouragement in all areas of life and includes nutrition, fitness, stress reduction, and lifestyle counseling. The focus here: the client’s values, needs, vision, and goals! 6. Children and Exercise

Childhood and adolescent obesity continues to be a major health issue because of its association with medical issues such as diabetes and hypertension. Good health habits are learned young – the new year is the perfect time to get kids moving again!
