November 2009 - MORE THAN JUST READING

I confess, I am a library junkie. Most of you probably already know about the fantastic programs that the Naperville Public Library offers, but did you know that the other area libraries also offer great programs. You might think you need to be a resident to participate in these programs, but think again, you do not! Most of these programs are free to both residents and non-residents, and most do not require too much advance planning either.

On one rainy day we were looking to get out of the house and burn some energy. The Fountaindale Public Library in Romeoville offered a fun and free solution. They post their activity calendar online so you have quick and easy access to their activities on any given day. On this particular day, they offered a Duplo Activity Time for ages 2-5 year old children. The only requirement was that you call and reserve your space ahead of time. They simply take your name, the child’s name, and your phone number. They permit only a limited amount of children in each activity so each can have ample space and time with the activity offered. I was able to call at 9am for a 10:30am session the same day and I reserved spots for 4 children. They were even flexible with the ages, as one of mine was under two.

When we walked into the room, there were tables and chairs and the duplos were on the table. I asked if we could play on the floor and they were very accommodating to that request. Now, imagine this – I have the same Duplos at home, the same accessories, the same people, the same colored box and wouldn’t you know that my group of four (under the age of 4) played so wonderfully with those Duplos, they didn’t move for the 45 minute play session. Go figure! It is definitely always more fun to play with someone else’s toys.

The kids had a great time and the short drive was well worth the free activity. Check out their calendar at www.fountaindale.lib.il.us for other fun and free activities.

The Fountaindale Public Library is located at 201 W. Normantown Rd, Romeoville, IL 60446. Phone is 815-886-2030. Hours are Mon 9am-9pm, Tues & Thurs 1pm-9pm, Wed, Fri, Sat 9am-5pm.
